What Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
Backed by the Federal Government, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is set to launch on 1 July 2025. It aims to accelerate the adoption of home battery systems by offering upfront rebates, helping homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities reduce energy costs and increase energy independence.
Key Details
- Launch Date: 1 July 2025
- Total Funding: $2.3 billion
- Rebate Value: approximately $372 per usable kWh (capped at 50 kWh)
- Typical Savings: Up to $4,000 for an 11.5 kWh system
- Eligibility: Homeowners, small businesses, community facilities
- End Date: 2030 (rebates will reduce over time)

What You Need to Know
- The program is still being finalised; details are subject to change. We’ll keep you updated as government guidance evolves.
- To qualify, systems must:
- Be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capable (on-grid only)
- Use Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved batteries and inverters
- Comply with AS/NZS 5139:2019 safety standards
- Be installed by a CEC-accredited installer
- Be paired with existing or new rooftop solar
Note: Some states and territories, including Western Australia, may offer additional rebates. WA’s Residential Battery Scheme requires VPP participation and can be combined with the federal program. Please check your local scheme or contact your DPA representative for details.
Note: Federal eligibility also requires systems to have a nominal storage capacity of between 5 kWh and 100 kWh.
On-Grid vs Off-Grid Eligibility
On-grid systems must meet all standard criteria, including VPP capability.
Off-grid systems, however, are exempt from the VPP requirement and remain eligible if either:
- The installation site is more than 1 km from the nearest grid line or
- It would cost more than $30,000 to connect to the grid
